Sensoneo, a leading company in data-driven waste management solutions, has successfully deployed its first batch of fill-level monitoring sensors across the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) network. This marks a significant milestone in a strategic project aimed at modernizing waste management operations and supporting BART’s broader commitment to sustainability and improved rider experience.
BART, the seventh-busiest rapid transit system in the United States, recorded 50.7 million annual passenger trips in 2024 across 50 stations and 131 miles of track. As part of the initiative, Sensoneo’s sensors are now monitoring waste levels in dumpsters and roll-on/roll-off containers used at train stations and maintenance facilities.
The real-time data enables BART’s team to optimize waste collection, enhance operational efficiency, and maintain cleaner, more welcoming public spaces.
“We are very happy to contribute with our technology to this smart waste project positively impacting the daily lives of tens of thousands of passengers,” said Roman Gdovjak, VP of Business Development (USA, Canada) from Sensoneo.
“Sensoneo’s sensors are helping us achieve our goal of maintaining cleaner stations and trains for our riders,” said Michael Cox, Manager of Sustainability Projects at BART. “This innovative technology helps us track our waste container fill levels more effectively and make operational adjustments as needed.”
This project complements BART’s ongoing improvements, including fleet modernization, expanded safety measures, and station upgrades - all part of a comprehensive effort to better serve Bay Area communities.
Sensoneo's durable hardware and robust software solutions, delivering operational efficiency and cost savings, will be on display at Waste Expo Las Vegas from May 5–8. All data-driven innovations will be showcased at booth 963, where team members will be ready to discuss waste collection challenges and opportunities.
