WTE, recycler partner to treat medical waste

  • A recycling company is partnering with a waste-to-energy (WTE) company to test and treat medical and pharmaceutical wastes. 
  • MagneGas Corp., a WTE company based in Tarpon Springs, FL, established an agreement with Largo, FL-based Pioneer Recycling LLC to handle liquid medical waste and old prescriptions via a MagneGas industrial recycler. 
  • The firms said the partnership could flourish based on the initial results of the tests.

Dive Insight:

MagneGas estimates the liquid sterilization market is a multi-billion-dollar industry. The companies combined strategy is to expand upon opportunities in this market, and is part of a wide net that includes treatment of manure and fish farm water waste.

Pioneer, a recycler that handles industrial and commercial clients, was pursuing new methods to treat medical and pharmaceutical waste. Pioneer anticipates the process using the MagneGas system will treat the waste at a low cost and reduced emissions.
