Dive Brief:
- The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) granted permits to a landfill in Crofton, MD that will accept rubble and construction debris.
- The permits were issued only weeks before a new law that bans this type of debris goes into effect. The site must meet 10 conditions in 60 days to move forward with the plans.
- Andrew Pruski, a member of the County Council, said that due to the new law enacted in the county, the legal status of the permits is “open to interpretation.”
Dive Insight:
The City Council voted in June to support the ban, which will go into effect on January 1, 2015. There are still many things that could disrupt the landfill operations: The MDE could potentially reverse the decision, members of the community could file an appeal, the exemption granted to the property could not be given an extension, or the General Assembly could take action against the plans.
