- Bob Melcher, a waste hauler from Dallastown, PA, participated in the Twin City’s Marathon in St. Paul, MN.
- He prepares for the event while he’s at work every day, running behind the garbage truck for about 10 miles per day. He slows down at each residence to throw tons of trash into the back of the truck.
- While still a teenager in the Marines, Melcher had a heart attack. He eventually got a pacemaker and began running in marathons at age 41 as a way to stay in shape.

Melcher mentioned that the households in the area the waste company services, customers enjoy seeing him run during the pick-up, and many even tell their friends about the unusual routine. He said he serves as an inspiration to others because seeing him run with a pacemaker “pumps them up.”
