Dive Brief:
- Waste Management announced the opening of its new $19 million Milam Renewable Natural Gas Facility in Fairmont City, IL.
- The natural gas is produced from methane captured from Waste Management’s Milam landfill. The processed renewable natural gas will travel via pipelines into alternate locations, including other facilities owned by the waste and recycling behemoth.
- The facility is capable of processing 3,500 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas. This quantity could potentially fuel 200 trucks in Waste Management’s fleet on a daily basis; to date, 100 trucks run on compressed natural gas (CNG).
Dive Insight:
Waste Management currently has 134 landfill projects that use landfill gas to produce electricity, renewable gas or displace fossil fuel.
Jim Trevathan, the executive vice president and COO of Waste Management spoke about the facility, “This innovative facility utilizes renewable landfill gas, and purifies it to a high-quality natural gas that in turn feeds into the adjacent pipeline to fuel out growing fleet of CNG trucks. This truly maximizes available resources while creating a new and beneficial use.”
