- 245,000 cubic yards are being excavated at the Hillsboro landfill to make way for a 5.7-acre cell. The company’s long-term plan includes filling 152 acres of the 394 acre site with trash.
- According to the company, the landfill could have approximately 25 more years of accepting waste before the site reaches capacity.

Waste Management has multiple projects occurring at the site simultaneously. The company is creating a burn around the new cell. Ten homes were demolished to clear the area for the soil transport for this aspect of the project.
In addition, the construction of a wetland measuring 8.5 acres is underway. Work on the site began in June and is expected to be completed in the fall, says an engineer for Waste Management. Waste Management is a proponent for preserving wildlife at its sites. The company has initiated 43 wildlife programs at landfills in the U.S., with a goal set of establishing 100 certified programs by 2020.
