Dive Brief:
- Washington, IL, and Waste Management, which was a huge help in cleaning up from a November 2013 tornado, now have a five-year contract, which got the OK last week from the city council.
- The company cleared around 30,000 tons of debris, most by 2013's close, and was paid around $1 million from the city. The city saw reimbursement for the payment through a $1.9 million Illinois Emergency Management Agency grant.
- The current contract was set to expire at the end of the month, with the new contract in effect April 1 going all the way through March 31, 2020.
Dive Insight:
According to City Administrator Tim Gleason, the renewal only had to do with the company's offer.
According to Waste Management's public sector representative, Dave Schaab, it wanted to provide the city with a beneficial deal "because of the quality of people we met during the cleanup from the storm. We want to do as much for them as we can."
