Shawnee County commissioners on Monday authorized Waste Management Inc. to build a material recovery facility needed for the county to provide curbside recycling.
The commission for more than three years has been discussing and taking steps toward offering curbside recycling. Commissioners voted Feb. 2 to approve a contract with Waste Management committing that company to building the material recovery facility at its Rolling Meadows Recycling and Disposal Facility, 7351 N.W. US-75 highway.
The facility will be located on a 17.3-acre tract of vacant land at the northeast corner of the 330-acre Rolling Meadows facility. Plans call for it to be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
