• According to a lawsuit filed by Vermont officials, the owners of the Moretown landfill in Waterbury, VT violated 16 environmental regulations.
• The state alleges the site failed to contain landfill gas, maintain the landfill’s cover, monitor leachate, and control storm water discharge.
• Advanced Disposal could face fines of $85,000 for each violation, and $42,500 per day for every day the violations occurred. 

Dive Insight:

In 2013 the state denied Advanced Disposal’s application to continue operations. The rejection came after years of complaints that piled up against the site regarding odor and groundwater violations.

The landfill stopped accepting waste in July 2013, but the allegations stem from issues occurring after the landfill was closed.
