Dive Insight:
The U.S. has a similar concept, but the focus is on consumer e-waste, not feeding strays. ecoATMs, automated e-waste units, collect used consumer electronic devices in exchange for a cash payment on the spot. At some locations, users of the kiosks can choose to donate a portion of the payment received to charity. As of April, the company had collected over 190,000 used smartphones at 900 different kiosks in the U.S. This exchange provided customers with over $3.6 million dollars dispensed for the devices so far.
