Dive Brief:
- A landfill in Henrico County, Virginia is slated to close on June 30, 2014. Work will then begin on capping the site in the spring of 2015.
- The landfill closure is expected to have no effect on the public use area, and customers will not see a change in operations. A new transfer station will open the day the landfill is shuttered.
- Officials will notify around 140 commercial customers of the impending closure next month. The county wants to avoid a negative impact on private haulers, and are hoping that a new, private transfer station nearby will alleviate the demand once the landfill closes permanently.
Dive Insight:
An average of 42,000 tons annually was brought into the landfill by commercial haulers. If the transfer station does not open by the time the landfill closes, private waste companies will lose money on the extended transfer distances to haul their trash. A source says that the new facility is complete, and is just awaiting its certificate of occupancy.
