Dive Brief:

• Prince William County, VA, and Freestate Farms LLC announced a collaboration to create an organic waste program at a composting facility owned by the county. 

• The facility is expected to recycle approximately 80,000 tons of food scraps, yard waste and wood materials annually.

• The Balls Ford Road site has an anticipated opening slated for July 2017.

Dive Insight:

Freestate will build the facility and oversee operations when the site opens. It also plans to offer waste management services at the county landfill and on-site.

The facility will divert waste from the landfill, with plans to generate renewable energy. The composting facility will transform the waste into fertilizers, soil products and nutrient-rich compost.
