Dive Brief:
- On May 13, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Virginia will weigh a proposal to prolong the life of the Lorton Construction Debris landfill.
- There is controversy over the extension: Residents from the area oppose the proposal, while the landfill owner, EnviroSolutions, wants to operate the site until 2034. The community wants it closed by 2022.
- 80 residents are slated to testify against the plan in the public hearing on Tuesday.
Dive Insight:
A year ago, EnviroSolutions offered $18.2M if allowed to stay operational until 2040. The company proposed a plan to build a park area with the money, along with some environmental improvements, which was ultimately squashed by the community and environmental groups.
Recently, a landfill balloon test showed residents the height the landfill could reach, which EnviroSolutions reduced to 395 feet.
