Dive Insight:
Combined, the two companies service 20,000 customers daily. Potomac Disposal workers had organized a strike in September after requests for health benefits from the employer were met with threats to verify immigration status of the workers. The employee at Unity was allegedly let go for speaking out in favor of union representation during a meeting. Unity's trash collection was covered yesterday using alternate personnel such as managers and those workers who were not participating in the strike.
