Dive Brief:
- Trenton Biogas is planning to buy a sewage treatment plant and turn it into a food waste recycling facility, the first in the state.
- The food waste company was looking for a facilityto efficiently convert organic food materials into methane and fertilizer.
- The waste processing plant was never used and the building has exactly what Trenton Biogas needs to convert a projected estimate of 100,000 tons of food annually.
Dive Insight:
The owners of the sewage plant are four different towns and they want Trenton Biogas to lease the plant for ten years before it assumes ownership. The company will pay $400,000 each year to the towns for the initial two years, then $175,000 after that for the remaining eight years.
Trenton Biogas is expecting to generate revenue from charging haulers for the organic waste it brings in and by selling the extra electricity it creates to the utility plant and on the commodity market. Currently, food waste is transported to other states for disposal.
