Dive Brief:
- An Arkansas city is saving both money and the environment by turning biosolid waste into Class A products. The recycling of the waste has been made possible by using a Bio-Scru thermal dryer, developed by Bencia, CA-based manufacturer Therma-Flite.
- By using the thermal drying system, the biosolids are being turned into soil amendments rather than being disposed of in landfills. This process saves the city $400,000 a year in trucking and disposal costs. Additionally, a company buying the Class A product is paying the city by the ton to haul it away.
- The new Therma-Flite system, which was implemented by the city in July 2013, replaced the city's need to deal with the waste disposal of Class B products, which the old system produced. Now, the disposal of biosolids is more cost-effective, and leaves a smaller environmental footprint.
Dive Insight:
With emerging technology, Class B waste can now be safely and effectively used to lower government costs, rather than add to them. With systems such as the Therma-Flite dryer, waste can be recycled and reused in environmental settings, all while costs and carbon footprints are diminished.
