- Vancouver, Canada is partnering with TerraCycle Canada to start the "Cigarette Waste Brigade," a cigarette butt recycling program.
- Smokers can discard their finished cigarettes in one of 110 bins which have been placed on the sidewalks of downtown Vancouver or they can be collected and sent into a facility for processing.
- Cellulose acetate in the filters will be used to produce shipping pallets and other industrial products, while the tobacco will be composted.

The pilot program was launched as part of the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan. Vancouver is striving to become the greenest city in the world by 2020. Other efforts include a LEED-certified convention center, an auto-share and using recycled plastics in road construction.
