When complete, the facility will be capable of processing 4.5 metric tons of PET plastics every hour. The plant will accept PET bottles from around the state, grind the bottles into flakes, then market them to consumers for use in various polyester products.
PET recycling is on the rise. As detailed in a report issued by the National Association for PET Container Resources, figures show PET recycling has swelled by 53% in the past 12 years. Packaging industry research association Smithers Pira projects the global PET packaging market will grow to be worth $60 billion by 2019.
