- The Texas Supreme Court has denied the final appeal of groups opposing the construction of a landfill in Jacksboro, Texas.
- The City of Jacksboro was notified that trash and recycling company IESI has received the permit for the landfill, and is in a position to keep the permit active. Construction is expected to start once conditions are favorable.
- The city has received an initial payment from the landfill. Jacksboro will receive $1.50 per ton of garbage, at a minimum of $150,000 annually, over the life of the landfill.
Dive Insight:
The IESI landfill has been in its planning stages for the past decade due to litigation surrounding the site. Although the Supreme Court decision has been finalized, a community action group is still considering putting up a fight against the construction of the landfill. The group cites evidence of nearby tectonic activity as a risk factor for landfill lining cracks that could result in water table contamination.
