Dive Brief:
- The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) fined Agilyx’s Portland, OR plastics-to-oil site $46,500 as a result of a September 2014 inspection.
- The DEQ alleges the company stored totes and drums containing hazardous waste at the Wastech plant. Other violations include failure to properly label containers, store waste only within the 90-day limit, store waste in closed containers and failure to maintain a contingency plan.
- Agilyx requested a hearing regarding the matter; an informal meeting of both parties will occur prior to finalizing the details of a hearing, said Steve Siegel, a DEQ attorney.
Dive Insight:
The DEQ noted that the cited waste has been removed; the agency said it took the company’s effort to correct violations into consideration prior to determining the amount of the fine.
Agilyx took over operations of the facility in 2011 as it began the transition into a waste-to-oil facility. Waste Management has owned the site since the mid 80s.
