Dive Insight:
Residents in the community are criticizing the decision to cap the site instead of excavating the hazardous substances that are causing noxious odors. According to a report, the estimated cost to cap the landfill is $7.8 million, while the cost of excavations was estimated at $38.7 million.
The troubled landfill has been an issue since 2012, when odors first started becoming a nuisance at Fenimore. The DEP issued an order and remediation got underway in June 2013. Since then, residents have launched complaints about the hazards and the state has filed lawsuits accusing the site owners of defrauding the state. In June, asbestos was discovered at the site.
