Dive Brief:
- The San Bernardino County Planning Commission in California announced that it unanimously approved a solar power project for a landfill.
- The 10-megawatt solar farm will be installed on the site of the Victorville Sanitary landfill.
- The solar array will use 58 acres of the 90-acre property, which is awaiting expansion.
Dive Insight:
Generally, installing solar arrays on landfills and brownfields is considered a savvy move. Energy collected from the panels can power local homes and businesses while also putting to use land that has limited opportunities for development.
A similar solar project at the Kinsey landfill in Sewell, NJ, is expected to become the largest of its kind in the state. 35 acres of the site will be used for the arrays. Once completed, the panels are expected to produce electricity capable of powering 2,000 homes.
