Dive Brief:
- The owners of the Bridgeton, Mo. landfill have agreed to pay $6.9 million to residents who live close to the troubled site.
- About 400 members of the community were involved in the suit, which was filed in March of 2013, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.
- The owner of the landfill, a subsidiary of Republic Services, will pay the funds to nearby residents as a result of the "loss of enjoyment of their homes due to a smell," KSDK reported.
Dive Insight:
The amount of the payments will vary between residents and are based on factors such as the length a resident has lived in their home and the property values assessed on each house. The odor coming from the site has worried residents for years. In January, Missouri's attorney general demanded air monitoring be conducted at the site.
The settlement still needs to get final approval from the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Missouri, scheduled to meet Aug. 1.
