Dive Brief:
- EIF Renewable Energy Holdings via its subsidiary Innovative Energy Systems completed the construction of Seneca Energy II, a renewable natural gas facility in Seneca Falls, NY.
- The latest addition to the site treats and refines landfill gas produced at the Seneca Meadows landfill, then converts it into renewable natural gas. The RNG moves through the pipeline and is then used to create electricity or converted into compressed natural gas.
- The president and CEO of EIF said the opening of the plant is a positive step for renewable energy produced in the US, and that it will create cost-effective and cleaner energy production by enabling the conversion of landfill gas from waste into power generation and transportation fuel.
Dive Insight:
The property the new plant sits on contains a landfill gas-to-electric power generation facility, which has been in use since 1996.
In May, a gas-to-energy plant opened in Valdosta, GA. The facility is adjacent to the Pecan Row landfill, and is expected to produce 4.8 MW of electricity using methane from the waste. ESG, the firm behind the plant, is behind the two other landfill gas projects in Georgia, and three other similar facilities in the U.S.
