The garbage worker strike initiated by Teamster Local Union 991 in Mobile, Ala., on March 22 in opposition to labor law violations by Republic Services/Allied Waste has spread to Seattle, Wash.
In February, Republic officials agreed to a contract but soon backed out after deciding they wanted to pay less for health care coverage for the workers' families.
Demonstrations have taken place in Columbus, Ohio, and Buffalo, N.Y., where collection services were nearly shut down from March 23 to March 26.
