Dive Brief:
- Republic Services announced its subsidiary, Republic Silver State Disposal, began construction on a $34 million recycling facility in Las Vegas, NV.
- The 110,000 square foot plant will essentially double the capacity of residential recycling in the southern part of the state.
- The recycling complex anticipates processing 70 tons of materials per hour, adding up to 1,000 tons of recyclables daily.
Dive Insight:
The recycling complex will operate in tandem with its existing plant, paving the way for the duo to collectively be “the largest residential recycling operation in the country,” according to Republic Services.
In addition to accepting construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the facility will be equipped to accept a variety of materials for recycling including yogurt cups, take-out containers, and beverage cartons.
When complete, the facility will feature an interactive learning center for the community. Ken Oudman, the company’s area president, also announced that Republic plans to convert its fleet of waste vehicles to compressed natural gas.
