Dive Brief:
- Los Angeles-based Rehrig Pacific Co. recently won a contract to provide Toronto, Canada, with 500,000 residential organic waste bins. The 10-year contract is for the manufacture, installation and maintenance of the green bins, according to Beth Goodger, general manager of Toronto’s Solid Waste Services Division.
- The new bins have a lock that keeps animals and pests out, Rehrig officials said. The style and size of the bins allows for automated and semi-automated collection. The should get the bins by early 2016.
- Taking into consideration Toronto’s needs for its organic waste program and also the needs of residents, Rehrig designed a model bin specifically for the city.

Bins currently in use in Toronto are close to the end of their usefulness. “After a series of stringent testing phases, we were able to design a new 100-liter organics bin specifically for the city that improves the logistical efficiencies of collection, and enhances the residents’ experience for participating in the organics collection program,” said Dennis Monestier, Rehrig’s sales manager for Canada.
