Dive Brief:
- Hamm, Inc., recently upgraded its Lawrence, KS facility with a single-stream recycling operation. The new operation can process 10 metric tons hourly. It will sort corrugated cardboard, paper, mixed plastics and PET, glass, and metals.
- An essential part of the new system is the Stadler Ballistic Sparator STT 5000/101. The city of Lawrence created a single-stream collection system in 2013, in an effort to increase the amount of materials recycled by residents and businesses.
- While recycled commodity pricing continues to fluctuate (as it naturally does), investment in recycling technology continues. More cities across the US are adopting single-stream recycling.
Dive Insight:
In order for new methods to become widely accepted, sometimes systems and processes must be in place for the recycling to work. With the addition of another single-stream recycling operation, this form of recycling will be on the rise.
