Dive Brief:
- Progressive Waste Solutions has joined forces with NFL football team New Orleans Saints to encourage children in the area to recycle by offering a recycling competition to local elementary schools.
- Progressive will distribute recycling bins to each of 27 participating schools; the children will then fill it with newspapers, magazines, cardboard, cans and plastics to be measured and recorded by the company.
- The three schools that recycle the most materials will be invited to participate in the Saints Junior Training Camp in the spring.
Dive Insight:
The owner of the Saints, Rita Benson LeBlanc, stated on the Saints website that she believed it was imperative that "we educate the youth in New Orleans about the importance of recycling and the impact it will have on our future." The spokesperson for Progressive said the company is hoping the contest teaches kids to include recycling into their routines everyday.
Students will be able learn more about recycling and track their progress on a soon to be launched page that will be added to the Saints website.
