Dive Brief:
- Progressive Waste Solutions has added 250 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks since 2012, when the company announced its dedication to increasing the number of "environmentally-friendly" vehicles in its fleet.
- The waste and recycling company now has 400 natural gas powered vehicles, or 10% of its entire fleet.
- Generally, new CNG collection trucks cost around 15% more than a conventional truck that uses diesel fuel. Since natural gas costs less than diesel, companies expect an eventual return on investment.
Dive Insight:
Some haulers, including Progressive Waste, build their own CNG fueling stations, which serve to facilitate the conversion to natural gas. In 2013, Progressive announced it was expanding its fleet, and added 40 trucks that year alone.
