Dive Brief:
- Plastic Recycling Inc (PRI) announced that it will build a new polystyrene facility that will recycle post-consumer polystyrene materials.
- The plant will be located in Indianapolis, IN. The facility is expected to be operational by early 2015.
- PRI will recycle materials collected at materials recovery facilities that process residential curbside recycling.
Dive Insight:
The plant is partnering with Dart Container Corp. and will incorporate Dart's washing technology into the project. While Plastic Recycling says it is one of the largest recyclers of polystyrene, Dart touts itself as the world's largest manufacturer of foam products.
Dart previously made attempts to sway New York City Council to drop a ban on polystyrene cups and trays. Back in November of 2013, under then-Mayor Bloomberg, Michael Westerfield, corporate director of recycling programs for Dart, proposed that the city sell the foam to the company itself, who would then transport the materials to a recycling facility owned by Plastic Recycling in Indiana. The administration rejected the plan.
