Dive Brief:
- Bowling Green, OH-based Phoenix Technologies will spend $18 million to add a new wash line to its facility. The new line will enable Phoenix to manufacture clean flake, which it uses to manufacture recycled PET.
- PET is used to make packaging for food, cleaners and other products. Before installing its new wash line, Phoenix bought clean flake or used bottles gotten in curbside collections, then sent them to a vendor to be washed, before processing the bottles.
- Having its own wash line will enable the company to create a more consistent flake material than it has been getting, according to Lori Carson, director of commercial operations for Phoenix. Improving the quality of the flake will help the company grow, she added.
Dive Insight:
Phoenix Technologies’ investment in its new wash line will combine the supply chain processes from bale to final pellet. The company hopes to lower is water use and also become more competitive with the investment.
