For the second time in the past year, Palm Beach County has accused a hauler of improperly diverting waste to facilities in neighboring counties.
In April, Waste Management, Inc. paid the county $719,000 to settle a dispute that they improperly sent waste to nearby Boward County.. Now, the county's Solid Waste Authority alleges that Republic Services improperly sent 2,838 tons of trash to their recycling plant.
At issue is the $42 per ton fees that the county collects when the waste goes to their landfill. The Solid Waste Authority now alleges that Republic Services owes the county slightly more than $119k.
In a statement, Republic Services said there "appears to be a misinterpretation" of how it is supposed to handle recyclable materials.
"We understand the inspector general's office will be conducting an investigation and we will cooperate fully with them," Republic spokeswoman Peg Mulloy wrote in an email to The Palm Beach Post. "Our local team will be meeting with the IG's people next week, and we prefer not to discuss this until we get further direction on what is required in the investigation."
