Dive Brief:
- The Pennsylvania Resources Council started a new campaign aimed at increasing recycling in apartment complexes in Pittsburgh, PA, and the surrounding Allegheny County.
- The council has begun setting up meetings with residents, as well as educating and informing them about the benefits of recycling.
- Fifteen apartment buildings are participating in the program. New signs outlining the do's and don'ts of recycling, informational materials for every resident, and free blue bins are helping get the word out to a greater number of people.
Dive Insight:
Bill Klimovich, the city’s assistant director of environmental services, said Pittsburgh’s recycling rate is around 70%. He said that despite the high number, the city hasn't improved much in the past decade, citing that 10 years ago, the rate was 65%.
The program coordinator for the PRC, Mary Kate Ranii, said the organization wants to make recycling “as easy as possible. It is up to the residents to make the choice, but by making it convenient, easier and streamlined, it will kick most people over the edge.”
