Dive Brief:
- Residents of Ford City, Pennsylvania are using a recycling drop-off site to leave their recyclables, but others are trashing the place. Many people are leaving old computers, mattresses and various other waste that’s not accepted for recycling at the site.
- The drop-off site in Ford City Borough is part of Armstrong County’s recycling program, but the unwanted waste left there is creating more work for borough employees, who have to haul the unwanted trash from the site twice a week.
- Eden Ratliff, Ford City Borough manager, hopes people stop using the site as a dumping ground, and noted that the borough has had problems for years trying to keep the site clean. The problem persists at other recycling trailer sites throughout the county.
Dive Insight:
Ford City officials are talking about fencing the recycling site to stop the illegal dumping. Such a measure may be necessary to end the flow of unwanted waste into the recycling site. The surveillance cameras would be of more benefit if they were upgraded with the ability to read license plates.
