Dive Brief:
- Novelis Inc., an aluminum manufacturer and recycler based in Atlanta, GA, announced plans to invest $106 million to increase the yearly capacity of its Pindamonhangaba, Brazil recycling complex.
- Upon completion, the plant will be capable of processing 390,000 metric tons annually, as compared to its current capacity of 200,000 metric tons per year.
- The expansion project will move the company toward its goal of increasing the amount of recycled content in its products to 80% by 2020.
Dive Insight:
The recycling facility is the largest in South America at this time. Novelis says that further expanding the facility will allow the company to keep up with Brazil’s demand for aluminum beverage cans. The investment in the complex will also enable Novelis to process a greater volume of recyclables.
The increased recycling capacity in Brazil could also bolster another Novelis innovation. In May 2014, the company introduced the ‘Evercan,’ a beverage can made from a minimum of 90% recycled materials. At this time, the cans use more recycled materials than any can available on the market.
