Last spring, Central Park received 700 new trash bins, which doubled the amount of receptacles it previously had. Solar-powered recycling bins were placed in Lower Manhattan last summer in an effort to help former Mayor Bloomberg attain his goal of doubling the city's recycling rate. In an unusual twist, in January, New York City's MTA removed trash bins from 29 stations to reduce waste piling up in the area.
