Fort Wayne, Ind., is buying more recycling carts to meet demand.
The Board of Public Works approved the $345,000 purchase of 6,390 carts to keep up with participation, which has exceeded expectations, The Journal Gazette reported. Matt Gratz, city solid waste director, said cities with unlimited garbage disposal normally don't surpass 70% recycling participation, the paper reported. If each of the new carts are used by residents, the recycling rate would jump to 80% from 73%, the paper reported. The carts were bought with money from the city's solid waste fees.
