Harnett County faces a potential multi-million dollar funding shortfall for its landfills, commissioners learned Tuesday.
A report released at the Harnett County Board of Commissioners' monthly work session showed that a fund to offset costs of eventually closing the landfills was created in the 1990s, but the fund never received any money.
As a result, the county could face eventual closure and post-closure costs of an estimated $3.6 million without a reserve fund.
"This kind of shocks me," said Commissioner Jim Burgin. "Nobody saw this coming? Have we overlooked something? Ignored something? Just how did we end up here?"
County Financial Officer Sylvia Blinson said money was supposed to be placed into an account created by the board in the 1990s.
