Dive Brief:
- Miami, OK added a new truck to its waste fleet -- a brightly-colored, pink state-of-the-art truck that will be visible on some routes in the town.
- The attention-grabbing truck was acquired by the city as part of the Solid Waste Department's effort to show employee support for people in the community dealing with breast cancer.
- The city purchased two new state-of-the-art trucks, one in pink, the other a shade of hard-to-miss bright yellow. The vehicles are automated and are used for residential and commercial customers.
Dive Insight:
According to Kevin Horn, head of the Solid Waste department, the modern trucks will also serve to reduce workman comp claims and reduce the manpower needed to operate the vehicle, as only one operator is needed on each new truck. City officials anticipate savings of $233,000 over the next four years thanks to the reduce need for manpower.
Around the globe, vehicles ranging from airplanes, to public buses, to rail systems are painted pink in order to promote awareness of breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness month.
