Dive Brief:
- Kevin Sherman, the father of Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, has been an employee of the Los Angeles sanitation department for the past 26 years.
- Mr. Sherman will not give up his job even though his son, a Super Bowl champion, could support his father. He says he is too close to retirement and that it doesn't make sense for his son to be expected to take care of his expenses.
- Sherman wakes up at 3:45 a.m. each morning to get to work hauling waste in Los Angeles. He cut a recent holiday visit with his son short in order to make it to work on time the next day. He attended the Super Bowl, but flew out the next morning so he could be in Los Angeles in time for work on Tuesday morning.
Dive Insight:
In a recent interview with the LA Times, Sherman recounted the past three decades of work, saying, "It's not as tough as it used to be. We used to hand-load. We used literally pick up the cans and dump them. Now, it's gotten a little easier."
