Dive Brief:
- Brunswick, ME’s town council is planning to let its waste hauler put more waste into its Graham Road Landfill, though the site has had problems complying with Environmental Protection Agency and Maine Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
- While the landfill has had issues with controlling leachate and eliminating ammonia, Brunswick’s town leaders see a good trade-off in allowing more waste to be dumped there. A still-to-be-inked contract with Pine Tree Waste would bring a lowered rate for residential trash pick-up, in return for a discounted tipping cost for the hauler at the landfill.
- Brunswick Town Council recently OK’d the contract, which would extend the hauler’s current contract with the town.
Dive Insight:
Director of Public Works John Foster recently said the landfill has approximately 10 more years left in it, and that added waste coming from the lowered tipping cost would not change the timeline drastically.
