Dive Brief:
- Republic Services, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), two business owners (Rex Cut Products Inc. and Fall River Freeholders Ltd.), and the city of Fall River, MA have finally reached an agreement regarding the shuttered Fall River Industrial Park landfill.
- The parties iagreed that seven acres of contaminated property will be capped. The plan is expected to save the city more than $3 million.
- Under the agreement, the owners of the site will grant contaminated land to the city. They will then be cleared from the responsibility of capping the site. Republic Services will be in charge of monitoring, filling, and capping the landfill.
Dive Insight:
Negotiations surrounding the property have been underway since June, and the landfill was closed on October 10. The city of Fall River was given a one-two punch as it first said good-bye to $1.8 million in annual fees generated from the landfill and now could be liable for costs associated with contamination of the property.
