Dive Brief:

• The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality issued an administrative order against the Harrelson landfill in Shreveport, LA.
• The landfill, owned by Harrelson Material Management, must stop all activity at the site, including accepting and disposing of new waste, which is suspected to be the cause of a fire and smoke that is emerging from the landfill.
• The DEQ has been to the landfill over 25 times, and previously slapped the site with a Cease and Desist order, set to expire on June 30, 2014.

Dive Insight:

DEQ is working in conjunction with the Shreveport Fire Department, the Fire Marshal and the mayor of Shreveport to deal with this issue and plans to monitor the site until the fire is extinguished.
