Dive Brief:
- Kleangas Energy Technologies, Inc. is in the midst of acquiring an energy company that transforms methane into electricity.
- The Tampa, FL company filed with the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) to purchase the energy facility, located in the Midwest.
- Kleangas announced it will increase its production of electricity and wood pellets over the next year to meet growing demand.
Dive Insight:
The plant being acquired by Kleangas generates approximately 15,000 metric tons of pellets per year and 2.4 megawatts of electricity. The power is then sold to a utility company. The plant uses the heat created by burning the landfill gas to make wood pellets, which are a coal alternative.
Kleangas CEO Bo Linton said that the demand for electricity and wood pellets is expanding due to increased demand for clean, renewable energy. He said that many coal-fired electrical generation plants are being converted into wood pellet-fired electrical generation plants because “utility films are retiring their coal and nuclear power plants.”
