Dive Brief:
- Green Technology Solutions (GTSO) and its partner Chilerecicla have started exploring commercial methods of removing precious metals from e-waste in Latin America
- The companies are moving towards optimizing the collection of e-waste in regions of South America. The population in this area has over 600 million residents, many of whom have, but do not necessarily recycle, their electronics.
- Urban mining is an important aspect of GTSO's vision to compete alongside major companies in the sector. It is looking to increase its rare earth and precious metal production across the globe.
Dive Insight:
The partnership between GTSO and Chilerecicla was established in the summer of 2013 as a way to expand services into the U.S. and Latin American electronic waste markets.
"With less than 4% of all e-waste in Chile being recycled, there is an excellent opportunity in Chile and Latin America to improve that number through e-waste education and collection," said GTSO's CEO Paul Watson.
