In a deal approved on Tuesday, the city of Franklin, TN has kicked its BRI/Republic Services to the curb and has contracted with Bi-County Solid Waste Management for landfill and collection services.
Franklin was initially soured on BFI/Republic in 2009 after the tipping fee unexpectedly went from $18.50 a ton to $25 a ton. Franklin leaders say they’re making the deal with Bi-County to ensure greater savings they believe they can get with BFI/Republic.
However, Bi-County will charge Franklin $32 per ton of garbage each year for the first three years of the contract, which includes hauling the garbage once it’s collected and its disposal. Fees would go up incrementally as part of a 14-year overall arrangement.
BFI/Republic’s new proposal offers a $27 a ton fee, including hauling.
Franklin had sought requests for proposals from other garbage haulers and landfills but ultimately rejected those offers to the chagrin of their current landfill provider, BFI/Republic.
“There are a lot of things in there that I don’t feel they did in the best interest of the residents of the city,” said John Doyen, general manager for BFI/Republic Services.
His figures show Franklin would save $6.2 million with his company over a 14-year period.
