Dive Brief:
- The Encina Wastewater Authority (EWA) has commissioned a facility to recycle used cooking oil and food waste, which will be transformed into energy.
- J.R. Filanc Construction was awarded the contract to build the facility in Carlsbad, California. In conjunction with Liquid Environmental Solutions, the construction company will build an Alternative Fuel Receiving Facility.
- Oil, grease, fats, liquified food and other digestible solutions will be delivered to the EWA's Water Pollution Control Facility. Then the waste will be anaerobically digested to produce biogas.
Dive Insight:
The EWA is expecting the project will pay for itself within four years of operation. The authority creates 80% of its annual electricity demand from biogas, which is made during the wastewater treatment process. Construction is expected to be finished six months after work on the plant begins.
