In an Earth Day announcement, eRecycling Corps announced that they had completed more than 550,000 device trade-ins in March. This represents a 300% increase over past year.
eRecycling partners with leading telecom carriers such as Sprint and Verizon to collect pre-owned phones from consumers. The company then refurbishes devices to create what they term as a new category of mobile device: a renewed device. Renewed devices are resold in the U.S. and in emerging markets, where they offer buyers access to mobile hardware at lower costs.
eRecycling Corps was co-founded by former RadioShack CEO, David Edmondson, and Ron LeMay, former CEO of Sprint PCS. In December, the company announced a $35 million round of venture funding in a round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
In the release, David Edmondson stated "eRecyclingCorps' program will keep more than six million wireless devices out of landfills and available for reuse in developing countries this year. Our biggest month ever is strong validation that our platform for rewarding consumers with instant, in-store credit is making wireless device trade-in and renewal the new norm not just on Earth Day , but throughout the year."
