Dive Brief:
- 2G CENERGY, a biogas tech supplier based in Florida, has been named as an equipment supplier for the new Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling in Grove City, Ohio. This includes a biogas cogeneration system, an advanced combustion management system and a gas treatment tech system.
- According to 2G, the project will be the largest waste-to-energy (WTE) and materials recovery facility (MRF) of its kind in the world. Upon completion, the buildings are expected to measure 185,000 square feet.
- The site is being developed by Team Gemini, who formed an agreement with the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) to build the waste receiving plant and MRF. The facility will include anaerobic digesters, and an adjacent site will include a sustainable industrial area and research park.
Dive Insight:
The project is divided into two separate phases, with expected completion dates of late 2014 and 2015. When it is finished, the plant is expected to be capable of processing 2,000 tons daily, or 30% of the current waste stream. Future plans include the ability to process the whole waste stream.
WTE is one of the fastest expanding segments in renewable energy markets, prompting a flurry of new projects across the U.S. and worldwide, and is expected to reach $28.6 billion by 2016.
